If যুক্ত বাক্যকে সাধারণত Conditional Sentence বলা হয়। একটি Conditional sentence-এ ২ টি clause থাকে একটি নির্ভরশীল clause  এবং অন্যটি প্রধান বা স্বাধীন clause । এদেরকে ‘if clauses’ ও  বলা হয়ে থাকে। সহজভাবে বললে  Conditional Sentence কে সাধারণত দুটি ভাগে বিভক্ত করা যায়। যথা:
১. If যুক্ত বাক্যকে বলা হয় If Clause যাতে একটি শর্ত দেয়া থাকে
২. Main Clause যাতে উক্ত শর্তের ফলাফল দেয়া থাকায় তাকে Result Clause ও বলা হয়ে থাকে।

Example:

a) If you come by bus, it will be quick.
b) If you run in the rain, you will become sick.
c) If I were a bird, I could fly in the blue sky.
d) If I had done the task, I could have got the prize.

Conditional Sentence মুলত ৪ প্রকার । যথা:
1. zero conditional sentences
2. First Conditional sentences
3. Second Conditional sentences
4. Third Conditional sentences

zero conditional sentences

একটি zero conditional sentence দুটি present simple verbs/tenses নিয়ে গঠিত হয় এর মধ্যে একটি ‘if clause’ এবং অপরটি মূল clause।

Zero Conditional Sentence সাধারণ সত্য এবং অভ্যাস বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। যখন ফলাফলটি সবসময়ই হবে এটা তখনও ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Structure: If+present simple+present simple

 If you heat water, it will boil.

If you push the button, it turns on.

First Conditional sentences :

First Conditional sentences এ  if এর পরে একটি present simple tense এবং এরপর একটি future simple clause থাকে। এই রকম conditional sentence সাধারণত ভবিষ্যতে হতে পারে এমনকিছু বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয় কিন্তু পুরোপুরি নিশ্চিত নয় অথবা বলা যায় এটা সম্ভাব্য ঘটনা বর্ণনা করে।

Structure: If+Present, sub+Future

If I’ve enough money, I’ll help the poor people.

If you don’t leave soon, you will miss the college bus.

Second Conditional sentences : conditional sentence

Second Conditional sentences এ if-এর পর past simple tense ব্যবহার করা হয় এবং এরপর ‘would’ ও infinitive ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Structure: If+ Past+ Would, Could, Might+ Verb-এর Present form

আনুষ্ঠানিক লেখায় I/he/she-এর সাথে was-এর পরিবর্তে were ব্যবহার করতে হয়। Second Conditional এর দু রকম ব্যবহার আছে:

Second Conditional sentences সাধারণত ভবিষ্যতের কোন ঘটনা বোঝাতে ব্যবহার করা হয় যেটা সত্য হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা নেই। হতে পারতো কিন্তু হয়নি এ জাতীয় অর্থ প্রদান করে এই conditional গুলো।

If I won the lottery, I would make a hospital .

If I met the prime minister, I would salute her.

If he worked hard, he would achieve success in life.

বর্তমানের কোন ঘটনা যেটা অসম্ভব অথবা সত্য নয় সেরকম বোঝাতেও অনেক সময় Second Conditional  ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে। যেমন:

If I had her address, I would go to meet her.

If I were You, I would never go out with that man.

If I had a enough money, I would travel the whole world.

Third Conditional sentences :

Third Conditional sentences এর সময় if +  past perfect tense হয় এবং এর পরের বাক্যে  would have এবং sentence এর দ্বিতীয় অংশে past participle ব্যবহার করা হয়।  

Structure: If+ Past perfect , sub+ Would have, Could have, Might have + verb এর past participle

Third Conditional sentences সাধারণত অতীত সম্পর্কে হয় এবং এমন একটি ঘটনা বর্ণনা করবে যা ঘটেনি এবং ঘটনাটির ফলাফল কল্পনা করে মাত্র।
